FRIDAY

Comedy: The ATL Comedy Series brings comedian Thea Vidale to the 14th Street Playhouse for two shows at 8 and 10 p.m. Aug. 6.

Competition: Lilburn’s got talent, and the finalists at Lilburn Idol will compete in this year’s final showdown to prove it – and see who takes the top prize. At 7:30 p.m. in Lilburn City Park.

Stage: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved feline musical “Cats” is at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre through Aug. 8.

Music: The enduring ‘80s hitmaker and “Celebrity Apprentice” competitor Cyndi Lauper comes to Chastain Park Amphitheatre at 8 p.m. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings open the show.

Stage: “Singin’ in the Rain” is a romantic comedy based on the classic movie musical with familiar songs such as “Fit As A Fiddle,” “Good Mornin’” and “Make ‘Em Laugh.” It opens Aug. 6 and runs through Sept. 5 at Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville.

Sports, fireworks: The sky’s ablaze at Atlanta’s Turner Field for another Publix Friday Night Fireworks at the Atlanta Braves games. The Braves face off against the  San Francisco Giants at 7:35 p.m. Free with game ticket.

Stage: The Georgia Shakespeare Festival wraps up another summer season with performances of “Love’s Labour’s Lost” at 8 p.m. Aug. 6, “King Lear” at 8 p.m. Aug. 7, “Shrew: The Musical” at 2 p.m. Aug. 8 and three matinee performances of “The Legend of the Sword in the Stone.” All shows are at Conant Performing Arts Center on the Oglethorpe University campus, Atlanta.

Comedy: Doug Benson is to the new millennium as Cheech and Chong were to the ‘70s. He’ll perform at the Laughing Skull Lounge in Midtown Aug. 5-7.

Stage: “Stealing Dixie” is Phillip DePoy’s dramatization of the Great Locomotive Chase, which began in Kennesaw (then known as Big Shanty). Andrews’ Raiders, a band of Union soldiers and sympathizers who pulled off a daring scheme to steal The General, a Confederate locomotive. It runs through Sept. 12 at Theatre In the Square, Marietta.

SATURDAY

Visual arts: Explore the last 40 years of Salvador Dalí’s life in “Dalí: The Late Work.” Aug. 7-Jan. 9 at the High Museum of Art,  Atlanta.

Hair show: Bronner Bros. International Hair Show is an annual gathering of hair and beauty professionals and students inlcudes workshops, classes, entertainment and competitions. Aug. 6-10 at the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta.

Party: The Surreal Soiree is a theme party inspired by the opening of “Dali: The Late Work.” 8 p.m. Aug. 7 at the High Museum of Art, where the exhibition will opens earlier the same day.

Festival: WRFG’s Birthday Block Party celebrates the radio station’s 37th year with a day of entertainment, eats and activities on the grounds of the Little Five Points Community Center, the station’s home, from 2-7 p.m.

Stage: The Marcus Jewish Community Center’s Center Theatre hosts Steve Solomon’s “Still in Therapy,” the sequel to his one-man show “My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m In Therapy.” Through Aug. 15.

Volunteer: The Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project is a nationwide initiative that calls on volunteers to help clean beaches, rivers and lakes. The Project comes to the Chattahoochee River Park at 9 a.m. Aug. 7.

Stage: The Essential Theatre’s Play Festival wraps up this weekend with the final performances of “Darker Face of the Earth” at 2 and 8 p.m. Aug. 7 and “Sally and Glen at the Palace” at 2 p.m. Aug. 8. At Actors Express, Atlanta.

Music: The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs the scores and songs from memorable Disney movies with “Disney In Concert” at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at the  Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta.

History: “War in Our Backyards: Discovering Atlanta, 1861-1865” will allow visitors to consider their personal connections to a war that was literally fought in all of our backyards.  Aug. 7-Oct. 1, 2011 at the  Atlanta History Center in Buckhead.

Music: Take a musical journey to a funkier time at the Flashback Festival, which will include Midnight Star, Zapp, the Whispers, Doug E. Fresh and Club Nouveau. At 6 p.m. Aug. 7 at Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood, Atlanta.

SUNDAY

Music, benefit: The Benefit Concert for the Decatur Education Foundation would be worthwhile even if it didn’t include stellar Decatur singer-songwriter Caroline Herring, but that makes it extra special. 5:30 and 8 p.m. Aug. 8 at Eddie’s Attic, Decatur.

Music: Among The Oak & Ash, which  is a musical project created by former Atlanta resident Josh Joplin, performs as part of the free Unplugged in the Park series. At 6 p.m. at Park Tavern on the edge of Atlanta’s Piedmont Park.

Sports, kids: On the Atlanta Braves’ All Star Sundays get autographs from Braves alumni or enjoy  entertainment and interactive games before the game. After the game kids ages 4-14 get to run the bases on the field. 1:30 p.m. Aug. 8. Free with game ticket: $6-$78. At Turner Field, Atlanta.
