ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Born in Atlanta, GA., Drew Alexander Forde has been playing the viola for nine years. He was selected to perform with the GMEA All-State Orchestra four times and sat as principal twice. Drew joined the prestigious Talent Development Program in the fall of 2006. It was here that he received scholarships for lessons and summer camps until he graduated in 2010. Since the first day of his freshman year in high school, Drew was the principal violist of his school orchestra. In his last year as principal, his orchestra performed in Carnegie Hall, where he led the viola section with multiple solos.

Drew was also a dedicated a member of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO) for three years and was second chair and Co-Principal of the viola section in his last two years respectively. In the summer of 2009, Drew was interviewed by CNN’s Soledad O’Brien and featured in a trailer for CNN’s “Black in America 2.” In 2010, Drew was a panelist for the League of American Orchestras Conference in Atlanta. That same year, he won the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra’s Concerto competition and soloed with both the ASYO and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
Drew recently studied at the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University in Macon, GA. At Mercer, Drew was asked to perform the Mendelssohn Octet alongside the world-renowned St. Lawrence String Quartet, with great acclaim. While at Mercer, he studied with Mr. Dutton and Assistant Principal Violist of the Minnesota Orchestra, Rebecca Albers.

This coming fall, Drew will be the first-ever alumnus of the McDuffie Center to attend The Juilliard School in pursuit of his Masters Degree. He will be studying under the tutelage of Heidi Castleman and Hsin-Yun Huang.

Alice Hong is a violin performance graduate student at Rice University studying with Cho Liang Lin. She recently graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music studying with David Updegraff. Growing up,Alice spent a year at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, as well as soloed with and sat as concertmaster for the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. She has also performed with the Ludwig
Symphony Orchestra as a soloist, and has been concertmaster of several other orchestras including the orchestras of Colorado College Summer Music Festival, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Brevard Music Center.

Alice is an avid chamber musician, having performed alongside Frans Helmerson and Milhaela Martin as well as been coached by members of the Juilliard String Quartet, Cavani String Quartet, Miro String Quartet, Chiara String Quartet, and Cypress String Quartet. Others include Shmuel Ashkenazi, David and Philip Ying, Roger Tapping, Andrew Jennings, Peter Salaff, Nicholas Tzavaras, Frank Huang and Samuel Rhodes. She has participated in CIM’s Intensive Quartet Seminar for two semesters, and her quartets have received the honor of being the featured performers of several programs, of premiering several pieces, and of receiving a fellowship at St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar and University of Nebraska’s Chamber Music Institute. Alice was the first prize winner of CIM’s inaugural Carl E. Baldessere Competition for composer virtuosi, the recipient of CIM’s Academic Achievement Award, Brevard Music Center’s “Outstanding Musician” award and Second Place at the CIM’s Darius Milhaud Competition.

She has attended numerous summer festivals, including Kneisel Hall, Heifetz Institute of Music, Colorado College Summer Music Festival, and Bowdoin International Music Festival. She performed as the first violinist of the inaugural quartet of “Heifetz on Tour” and has performed her compositions in numerous venues, including the Kennedy Center of Performing Arts and the Czech Republic.

Alice is also a composition minor at the Cleveland Institute of Music studying with Jeremy Allen. She began composing at the age of nine, and her first orchestral piece was premiered at the age of 11 by the Ludwig Symphony Orchestra. Since then, she has had her music performed by members of the New York Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, and students at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She has received several recognitions for her compositions, including the ASCAP Foundation Young Composers Award in 2004 and 2005, as well as an Honorable Mention in 2006. Alice was the first place winner for CIM’s inaugural Carl E. Baldessere Competition for composer virtuosi for her piece "Alcyone" for violin and electronics. She was also awarded first prize and honorable mention at the Pike’s Peak Young Composer’s Competition, as well as local prizes including the Georgia Music Teacher Association’s Composer Competition. Her pieces have been performed throughout the United States as well as the Czech Republic and Hungary, and have been discussed in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Speller of Notes series. Her viola sonata was chosen as the commissioned piece for the 2014 Northern California Viola Society competition and was performed at the Primrose International Viola Competition by the violist of the Cypress Quartet, Ethan Filner. Her violin sonata, Phoenix, was performed by the composer herself at the Kennedy Center of Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
